7 Questions to Ask a Chinese Canopy Factory Before You Wire Money

Quick Answer: Ask these seven things of any canopy factory — including us: ① Do you hold 3D scan data for my exact model year? ② What is the static roof load, and can you show the test? ③ How do you waterproof-test each unit? ④ What exactly does the warranty cover and from when? ⑤ Which trade terms do you actually ship, and which countries are excluded? ⑥ How is each unit packed and photographed before loading? ⑦ How fast do spare parts ship after the sale? A factory that answers all seven in writing is rare. One that volunteers the answers before you ask is your factory.

Sending a deposit to a factory you have never visited is normal in this trade — and it is exactly where buyers get burned. The good news: the factories worth wiring money to all survive the same seven questions, and the answers are checkable. This list is the one we would want asked of us, because we can answer every item with records, not adjectives.

1. "Do you hold 3D scan data for my model year?"

Why it matters: fitment is 90% of canopy satisfaction. A mould-stretched "universal" shell leaks at the rail line within a season.

A good answer: the platform count is stated, and your model year is confirmed against a scan before pricing. A red flag: "we have moulds for all trucks."

How we answer it: 23 platforms hold bed 3D scan data today — Hilux to F-150 to Radar RD6 — scanned with handheld blue-laser units, with new models scanned on request. Fitment is confirmed from the scan before any quote.

2. "What is the static roof load — and can you show the test?"

Why it matters: roof load is the number your rooftop tent and cargo depend on. "Rated 300 kg" without evidence is a brochure number.

A good answer: a rating per material/thickness plus test footage or records. A red flag: a single number with no test method, or "dynamic" used to inflate the figure.

How we answer it: 150 kg (galvanized 1.5 mm), 200 kg (aluminium 2.0 mm), 300 kg (aluminium 2.5 mm), 500 kg (aluminium 3.0 mm) — static, graded, with a filmed test showing ten adults standing and jumping on a shell.

3. "How does each unit get waterproof-tested?"

Why it matters: leaks are the #1 canopy complaint industry-wide, and the test is cheap to fake — a hose waved at a finished photo proves nothing.

A good answer: a defined per-unit procedure targeting door seams and joints, with an interior inspection. A red flag: "we check quality before shipping" — a slogan, not a process.

How we answer it: a direct jet along door seams and joints, then an interior check for seepage — documented on video. If a factory cannot show you its test, assume there isn't one.

4. "What exactly does the warranty cover, and from when?"

Why it matters: "1 year warranty" can mean the day the factory ships — long before the canopy reaches you.

A good answer: a term in months from delivery or sign-off, the covered parts listed, and the wear-item policy stated honestly. A red flag: the term starts at shipment, or "all quality problems" with no part list.

How we answer it: 28 months from the day you sign for delivery, in writing. Structural parts covered; seal strips are wear items — replacements are stocked as spares. Parts ship within 5–7 days of an order, and spares stay orderable for 3 years after a model is discontinued.

5. "Which trade terms do you actually ship — and where are the exceptions?"

Why it matters: a factory that advertises DDP but has never cleared customs in your country will convert your delivery into a forwarding puzzle at the border.

A good answer: the terms named (EXW/FOB/DAP/DDP — we do not quote CIF), plus the countries they exclude, stated before you plan logistics. A red flag: "we ship anywhere, no problem."

How we answer it: EXW, FOB, DAP, DDP; door-to-door to most countries, with seven named EXW-only exceptions — Brazil, Mexico, Israel, Iraq, Iran, India and Indonesia — where your forwarder collects at our factory.

6. "How is each unit packed — and do I get loading photos?"

Why it matters: ocean freight breaks canopies that packaging should have absorbed. The crate is the last line of defence.

A good answer: a specified crate (timber frame, corner protection, strapping) and photographic evidence per order. A red flag: "standard export packing" with no specification.

How we answer it: single canopies ship strapped in wooden crates — timber frame, corner protection, packing straps; bulk runs also go out in reinforced export cartons, as our loading footage shows. The buyer receives loading photos before departure; a 20HQ loads 25 crated units.

7. "How fast do spare parts ship after the sale?"

Why it matters: the warranty is only as good as the parts pipeline behind it. A lock or strut that takes 60 days converts a small fault into a parked truck.

A good answer: a stated parts dispatch window and a discontinuation policy. A red flag: no answer at all — most factories never get asked.

How we answer it: parts dispatch within 5–7 days of order, and spares remain orderable for 3 years after a model is discontinued.

What the audit table looks like

What to audit What "good" looks like Red flag
Fitment data Scan data per platform; fit confirmed pre-quote "Universal mould"
Roof load Per-material static rating + test evidence One number, no method
Waterproofing Defined per-unit seam test "Checked before shipping"
Warranty Term from delivery; parts list; wear-item policy Term from shipment
Trade terms Named terms + named exceptions "We ship anywhere"
Packing Specified crate + per-order photos "Standard export packing"
Spare parts Stated dispatch window + EOL policy No answer

The meta-question, and how to use it

Notice what all seven questions have in common: they ask for records, not promises. Any factory can say "high quality"; only an operating factory has scan files, test footage, crate photos and a parts ledger. Ask these seven of any factory you are talking to — including us. If the answers line up, the next step is a sample order from one unit, and we will build yours.

FAQ_SPLIT## Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to visit the factory in person?

It helps, but records substitute: test footage, loading photos, a maintained fact ledger and video calls from the production floor. A factory that refuses any of those is telling you something a visit would confirm.

Is a sample order really necessary?

For a first order, yes — start from one unit (samples start from one unit), inspect it on arrival within 7 days, then scale. It is the cheapest insurance in this trade.

What if the factory answers well but the price is higher?

A verifiable factory at +10% is cheaper than an unverifiable one at −10%, because the failure modes are priced in: leaks, wrong fit, dead warranty. The seven answers tell you which price is real.

Can I use this list for non-Chinese suppliers?

Yes — every question is about evidence, not geography. Suppliers in any country either have the records or they do not.
