Quick Answer: Due to import complexity in these seven markets, we currently quote Brazil, Mexico, Israel, Iraq, Iran, India and Indonesia on EXW terms only — your forwarder collects at our Zhongshan factory and handles freight and import clearance. Everywhere else we quote EXW, FOB, DAP or DDP, with DDP's customs clearance on us. EXW sounds like a brush-off; in practice it changes three things — who books the truck, who pays the freight, and who clears customs — and this article walks each one.
If you have imported from China before, you have seen the alphabet of trade terms. What most factory websites will not tell you is which terms they will actually refuse. We put the exception list in writing because buyers from these seven countries deserve to know the rules before they design their logistics — not after their forwarder hits a wall.
1. The two lists, and what each term really assigns
| Where the canopy goes | Terms we quote | Who clears destination customs | Who you need on your side |
|---|---|---|---|
| Brazil, Mexico, Israel, Iraq, Iran, India, Indonesia | EXW only | You (via your forwarder/broker) | A forwarder with import experience in that market |
| Every other country and region | EXW / FOB / DAP / DDP | DDP: we clear it as the seller | Nobody extra — we handle the chain to your door |
One more term to cross off your list entirely: we do not quote CIF, to anyone. CIF sounds convenient but leaves the destination leg — the part where cargo actually gets lost, taxed or stuck — uninsured in practice and disputed in theory. Our terms are chosen so that every leg of the journey has a named owner.
2. What EXW means at our factory gate
Under EXW the three transfers happen at one address — our loading area in Zhongshan:
- The truck is yours to book. Your forwarder schedules the collection, and we hold the production completion date stated on your quotation so the pickup window is real.
- The freight is yours to price. You negotiate the sea or air leg directly, which most established importers prefer — they hold forwarder accounts we could never match.
- Customs, both directions, need a plan. Export declarations are handled on the Chinese side as part of our process; import clearance at destination is your broker's job, with our commercial invoice and packing documentation supplied to your forwarder.
What does not change under EXW: the product, the price ladder (from US$538), the 15–25 working-day production window, the crating standard, or the roughly 25 units a 20HQ container takes. Roughly half of our export volume already moves EXW or FOB — the handoff at the factory gate is a routine our loading crew runs weekly.
3. The four-step playbook for an EXW-only market
Step 1 — Confirm fit and get the EXW quote. Send the truck model and bed length. We check against 3D scan data and quote the exact configuration, US$538 starting point, with the production completion date in writing.
Step 2 — Appoint your forwarder before you pay, not after. Ask them, in writing, that they handle imports for your HS heading — our canopies ship under HS code 8708295900 — and confirm the import duty position in your country. Duty is a variable we deliberately do not quote: it belongs to your tariff schedule, not our price list.
Step 3 — We coordinate loading with your forwarder. Crated units, container loading, and loading photos are standard; we align the pickup window with the production date so your forwarder is not paying for a truck that waits.
Step 4 — Track to your door. From handover, your forwarder's reference numbers rule. Our side stays reachable: 24-hour response on any claim, and warranty service identical to every other market.
4. Why we hold this line (and what would change it)
The seven-country list is not a judgment on those markets — several are among the fastest-growing pickup markets in the world. It is a statement about where we can stand behind the full chain. On DDP we promise door-to-door delivery with customs on us; that promise is only as good as our broker network in the destination country, and in these seven we do not yet have partners we would stake the promise on. Selling EXW there is the honest alternative: we do the 15–25 days of manufacturing to our standard, and we refuse to paper over the parts we cannot control. The list is reviewed as our partner network grows — ask at quotation time, because it does change.
5. The three mistakes EXW buyers make
| Mistake | What it costs | The fix |
|---|---|---|
| Booking the forwarder after production finishes | Demurrage and storage while everyone waits | Appoint at Step 2, before payment |
| Insuring only the sea leg | An uncovered accident on the factory-to-port drayage | Ask for warehouse-to-warehouse cover |
| Guessing the import duty | A margin that evaporates at customs | Have your broker confirm duty on HS 8708295900 before the PO |
None of these are exotic. All three are cheaper to fix on paper than at the port.
